Collateral damage

Document layouts

The majority of my work at The Frameworks involved laying out various pieces of collateral, mostly using pre-existing guidelines/templates but sometimes creating templates from new designs. Having to work on so many collateral documents made me very comfortable using Indesign and creating style sheets. I mostly worked on documents for large international clients such as IBM, Bloomberg and Toshiba, but I would also occasionally work on jobs for our smaller regional clients.
IBM
Solution briefs – Typically two to six pages in length, solution briefs convey the benefits that IBM and its technology partners can bring, concisely and accurately. For each solution brief, I would layout the copy using IBM's template and create a diagram based on original graphics provided by the client.
Thought leadership white papers – In-depth, strategically written analysis of a market and IBM’s approach or “point of view” from a business perspective. My job was to layout the copy provided by the content team as per the IBM collateral guidelines. I also had to create diagrams/graphics to use as supporting imagery throughout the papers.
Case studies – A description of the relative success of an IBM product(s), service(s) or solution – as experienced by a client company, or within IBM or an IBM Business Partner. Typically two to four pages, it illustrates how IBM helped solve a problem while demonstrating IBM expertise in specific industries and applications. Case studies were much less frequent than solution briefs or white papers, but followed the same style. I laid them out using style sheets, however, unlike solution briefs, they didn't require diagrams or graphics.
Bloomberg
Data Points – Bloomberg wanted a series of short summaries (6-8 pages) that recapped Bloomberg industry events for an executive audience. Our design team created the original layout for Data Points using a circle graphic combined with the "O" in points as the main focus. From this initial design, I created an InDesign template with style-sheets, guides and using colours from the Bloomberg brand guidelines. Once the template was established, it was then up to me to layout the copy and create the graphics when new copy was briefed in.
After a few months, Bloomberg came back to us with a revised style that their in-house team had worked on. The file was very rough so again I took their file and created a template for it to make future layouts a lot simpler. As with the previous style, it was my job to layout the files when we received the copy from the clients.
Infographics – Along with the restyling of the Data Points reports, we were also asked to create infographics to be uploaded online and run as a companion to the report. The first infographic was created by one of our designers, then I was tasked with laying out the future infographics following the same style. These layouts included creating a variety of graphics.
Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions
Following Toshiba’s acquisition of IBM’s retail store solutions business, we helped them to launch a comprehensive rebrand. As part of that rebrand I created templates for a range of collateral including white papers and solution briefs. Once the templates were finalised it was my job to populate them with copy provided by the content team using the style sheets I had set up.
Polaris
I created a short report template for Polaris based upon the brand guidelines that our design team had created during a rebrand. I then took this template and laid out the copy provided by the content team and recreated the diagrams and graphics using Polaris styling.
